John Adam Reich, MD has been named Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center. After serving in the interim position since December, he assumes the position permanently, effective immediately. Dr. Reich is also being proposed to Tufts University as the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine.
“From the outset, Dr. Reich demonstrated a natural leadership ability that ultimately made him the ideal person to lead our anesthesiology team,” said Michael Tarnoff, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Medical Center. “He embraces the tripartite mission of education, research and patient care, and understands that it takes a talented, cohesive and harmonious team to succeed.”
Dr. Reich was first introduced to the Tufts Medical Center community when he rotated through as a fourth year medical student. He felt drawn to the culture and was thrilled to match at Tufts MC for residency. After completing his fellowship in Seattle, he returned in 2013 as an attending physician in the Department of Anesthesiology. He served as Vice Chair of Perioperative Services from 2015 to 2016 before becoming Director of Cardiovascular Critical Care in 2016 and Medical Director of the hospital ECMO program in 2018, positions that he has held up to this point. Over the past year and half, he’s been essential in coordinating the Anesthesiology Critical Care response throughout the chaos of the pandemic.
“Dr. Reich has provided stability throughout a turbulent time,” said Tarnoff. “He possesses the humility, wisdom, emotional intelligence and talent to negotiate the complexities of leading the Department. We look forward to his continued success here.”
After earning his Medical Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Reich completed his General Surgery Internship with the Greenville Hospital System, his Anesthesiology Residency at Tufts Medical Center and his Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington Medical Center.
