Infectious Diseases Fellowship

The Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases faculty at Tufts Medical Center in downtown Boston is deeply committed to helping all of our fellows reach their career goals.

About

Through our clinical training and research training programs, the Infectious Diseases Fellowship provides rich educational opportunities that cover the breadth and depth of infectious diseases for both community-acquired and nosocomial infections. These areas include:

  • HIV infection - we have over 600 patients under our care and participate in national and international clinical trials.
  • Transplantation infectious diseases - we participate in comprehensive pre- and post-transplantation care for the heart (Tufts MC does the most heart transplants in New England each year), liver, kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
  • Hospital epidemiology and infection prevention - this program, built by David Snydman, MD, Emeritus Division Chief and former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer and led by Shira Doron, MD, MS, has shown marked success in reducing the rate of hospital-acquired infections.
  • Antimicrobial stewardship - we have one of the most comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship programs in the U.S. and have demonstrated success in reducing resistance and cost.
  • Global health and travel medicine - we provide travel care for hundreds of patients each year and also participate in global health research in Africa, Asia and Central/South America.
  • Outpatient antimicrobial treatment - we provide comprehensive, coordinated outpatient care for patients with complex infections requiring parenteral treatment.
  • Wound care and hyperbaric oxygen - Our infectious diseases physicians are embedded in a multidisciplinary clinic to treat wounds and provide the only hyperbaric oxygen therapy available in a Boston academic medical center.
  • Care for a diverse patient population - through the clinical training program, you will provide outpatient and inpatient care for a range of patient populations, including those of our downtown hospital, patients of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (which partners with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and the Massachusetts Department of Corrections) and patients of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Mass.

To help you meet your goals, our program offers rich research and scholarly opportunities. All fellows have a minimum of 6 months of protected research time. Our fellows are highly productive and have the opportunity to present their work at national and international meetings, such as IDWeek, ASM Microbe, SHEA and CROI. We wish you great success in your training and career.
