The Department of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center has experienced tremendous growth over the past several decades under exceptional leadership. In 2021, Dr. Karen Freund became the first woman to chair the department, continuing a tradition of innovation and excellence. Dr. Freund is a nationally recognized leader in women's health and healthcare disparities research.
Our department comprises approximately 250 full-time faculty members, 87 internal medicine residents and 76 fellows in internal medicine subspecialty fellowships. We have 14 clinical divisions, each providing outstanding clinical, educational, and research opportunities.
Inpatient medical teams
The resident-led inpatient teams manage approximately 176 patient beds across the following services:
- Cardiology (including electrophysiology and heart failure)
- Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
- Gastroenterology
- General Internal Medicine
- Geriatrics
- Hematology/Oncology
- Infectious Diseases
- Bone Marrow Transplant/Leukemia
- Medical Intensive Care Unit
- Nephrology
- Pulmonary
The typical ward team consists of one resident, 1-2 interns, 1-2 medical students, and an attending physician. Our unique subspecialty system and small team sizes ensure that patients are assigned to the subspecialty service appropriate for their condition. Consequently, residents receive education on various disease entities from subspecialists who are experts in their respective fields. This approach significantly enhances both patient care and resident education.
