PGY3 is broken up into 5 different outpatient blocks (OPD-A through OPD-E). Below is an example of the weekly schedule of a PGY3 on OPD-B.

PGY4 is dedicated to your chief resident role, outpatient work, and any elective rotations you are interested in. The responsibilities of each PGY4 resident is different and schedules vary depending on the role.

Didactics

Didactics take place each Wednesday. For PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents, didactics take place from 12:00pm-5:00pm, and for PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents, didactics can be a full day, from 10:00am-5:00pm.

Didactics vary in content throughout the year, with both regular lecture courses and special topics with guest lecturers. Regular didactics series include: Psychopathology, Psychodynamics, Psychiatric Formulations, Interviewing, Psychopharmacology, Neuropsychiatry, Note Writing, Child and Adolescent Fellow series. Other specialty topics include:

  • Medical psychiatry
  • Geriatric Psychiatry
  • ECT
  • Religion and Psychiatry
  • Board review/preparation
  • Cognitive Behavioral therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Public Psychiatry
  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Psychological Testing
  • Cultural psychiatry

Moonlighting

There are many lucrative moonlighting opportunities in the Boston area and Tufts MC residents are allowed to moonlight (and many do) according to the following guidelines:

  • You may only moonlight if you are a US citizen or have a green card.
  • You must have a full Massachusetts license.
  • You must fill out the Tufts Medical Center moonlight authorization form and have it approved by Dr. Morehead and Tufts Medical Center Risk Management (if it is not approved by Tufts Medical Center Risk Management, you will be responsible for supplying your own malpractice insurance).
  • Your training director must know of ALL moonlighting activity.
  • You may not moonlight if you are on warning or probation.
  • You may do no more than 3 TOTAL moonlight calls per month.
  • You must be at least at the PGY III level.
  • You must submit copies of your monthly moonlighting schedule(s).
