Those candidates applying for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship Program must submit a Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS) application, a Curriculum Vitae (CV), a personal statement, a copy of the Dean’s letter (MSPE), a copy of medical school transcript and a photograph. We require a minimum of three letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a faculty member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A chairman's letter is not required, but is recommended. All applications must be processed through the ERAS.

Candidates must be a graduate of an American Medical Association-approved medical school and a fourth year resident in good standing at an ACGME accredited institution.

Candidates must have passed the USMLE Examinations Steps I, II and III (CK and CS) prior to starting residency training. We do not have a minimum score requirement; however, we do use a three-digit score of 220 as a baseline for evaluation of the scores. We do not interview any candidate who fails either USMLE Step I, Step II or Step III. All candidates must participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

All foreign medical graduates must have proof of ECFMG certification and have passed USMLE Examinations Parts I, II, and III (CK and CS). They must apply through the ECFMG who will then process all foreign applications through ERAS. The Tufts Medical Center sponsors only the J-1 Visa. It is preferred to have had experience in US hospital.

Our application deadline is Monday, May 1.

Learn how to apply to the Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Our fellows have presented oral and poster presentations at annual scientific meetings for numerous regional and national/international societies, including the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), Society of Reproductive Investigation (SRI), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD), New England Perinatal Society (NEPS), and Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP).

Fellows are encouraged to pursue their research interests in basic science, clinical and translational research. It is the goal that each fellow will have at least one presentation a year at a regional or national meeting during their fellowship.

In addition, the fellowship will provide opportunities for individualized academic investigations, which are not only required for subspecialty certification, but will foster a lifelong spirit of inquiry.

Lecture + educational conferences

During each academic year, there are regularly scheduled lectures on the fundamentals of perinatal medicine. Regularly scheduled lectures/conferences include:

  • Biweekly conferences reviewing topics on prenatal diagnosis, genetics, teratology, infectious disease and postnatal management of fetal complications
  • Weekly clinical conferences covering the entire field of obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine (including acute intrapartum/antepartum/postpartum complications, medical complications of pregnancy and fetal and maternal physiology).
  • Monthly multidisciplinary conference of antenatal management and post-hoc review of prenatally-diagnosed anomalies, allowing for collaboration between perinatologists, genetic counselors, neonatologists, pediatric subspecialists and radiologists.
  • Monthly multidisciplinary conferences covering basic science research in obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics
  • Weekly departmental Grand Rounds
  • Monthly departmental Morbidity & Mortality
  • Quarterly divisional Journal Club
  • Quarterly perinatology-neonatology joint conferences covering clinical scenarios with challenging fetal and neonatal outcomes
  • Semiannual placental pathology conferences

We encourage fellow attendance and participation at regional and national conferences. The department will pay the expenses for educational conferences where a fellow presents. In addition, each fellow is given an annual CME stipend for travel to conferences, textbooks and other educational expenses.

The intent of the educational process is to provide the essential understanding and knowledge to render outstanding maternal-fetal care.
